Professor Brian King is Head of the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Marketing at Victoria University in Melbourne. His expertise focuses on emerging Asia-Pacific markets, resorts, investment, migration, government policy and human resource development.
Professor King has worked on numerous industry studies and consulting projects across the Asia-Pacific region. These have included an examination of hotel investment in the South Pacific, Resorts in Asia and tourism reports on Fiji, Laos, Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Vietnam. He was marketing advisor to the UN World Tourism Organisation for the Niue tourism development plan.
Another recent project involved evaluating restrictive business practices in Australia’s inbound tourism markets. This required in-depth fieldwork in China, and Australia and an understanding of government policy, regulation and approvals from both sides.
His work also includes a review, which has tracked Australia’s hotel industry over a fifteen year period. Focussing on tourism economics and industry dynamics the report identified a ‘boom and bust’ mentality in the hotel and resorts sector.
Professor King has also authored or co-authored a number of books including: Creating Island Resorts; Tourism Marketing in Australia; and Asia-Pacific Tourism: Regional Planning. He holds numerous editorial board positions and is Joint Editor-in-Chief of the international journal ‘Tourism, Culture and Communication’.
