Brad A. JOHNSON
National Food and Travel Editor
Modern Luxury Magazines
Brad A. Johnson is one of America’s leading food critics and travel writers. A chef/restaurateur turned writer/editor, Brad has written about restaurants, wine, food and travel for 15 years (following 10 years in the restaurant business). He joined Modern Luxury in 2001 and serves as the chief dining critic of Angeleno magazine and as national food and travel editor for the entire portfolio of Modern Luxury magazines (and websites) throughout the United States.
In June 2008, Brad won the James Beard Award for Best Restaurant Criticism (aka Best Restaurant Critic in America). The Beard Awards are widely considered to be the Academy Awards of the food and restaurant industry, the biggest prize of their kind in the United States. Each year, only three food critics from across the country are nominated for the top prize, for which Brad has been nominated three times since 2004.
What’s more, Brad has twice been nominated as Best Restaurant Critic Worldwide—the largest international prize of its kind for a food critic—at the biannual Le Cordon Bleu World Food Media Awards, held in Australia. For the past two competitions, Brad has been the only magazine writer from North America to be nominated for the top global prize, and in 2007, Brad was the only critic from the United States—magazine, newspaper or web—to receive a nod in this international field of the world’s best food critics.
Brad has also received numerous accolades for his travel writing, and, under his direction, Modern Luxury’s travel section has repeatedly been honored for outstanding editorial achievement. Brad’s travel writing adventures have taken him to Uganda’s Impenetrable Forest, where he tracked 800-pound mountain gorillas on foot. He has scoured the Basque Country of France and Spain in search of perfect tapas and traveled by train throughout Southeast Asia. In the fall of 2007, Brad was the only magazine travel journalist from the United States invited to fly aboard the first commercial flight of the new Airbus A380 Super Jumbo, the world’s largest airplane, on its maiden flight from Singapore to Sydney.
Brad was raised on a 16,000-acre working cattle ranch in West Texas, where dry-aged, grass-fed beef was served for dinner almost every night. But if the occasion was special, the family would slaughter a fresh young goat or lamb. The nearest store to the ranch was more than 40 miles away, so most of the family’s produce was grown in a garden behind the house. The nearest restaurant was across the border in Mexico. A passion for great food and adventure was inevitable.
Modern Luxury publishes the finest regional luxury lifestyle magazines in the United States, including Angeleno, Riviera, Chicago Social, Dallas, Houston, DC, The Atlantan, Miami, San Francisco, Hawaii and Manhattan. Additionally, Brad’s work has appeared in New York Post, Sunset, Westways, Restaurants & Institutions, Plate Magazine and SkyGuide, and he has appeared as a culinary expert or co-host on NBC Television, Travel Channel Radio and WGN Radio. Brad is also a longtime contributing reporter for Food & Wine.
